Complex Normal

Introduction

Complex is a type of Normal game, introduced in the October 2023 Normal Update on mafiascum.net. Complex games are intended to provide an experience of a mechanically standard Mafia game with an extensive range of potential roles and modifiers, providing room for experimentation and the introduction of new roles within the confines of Normal games. This type of game is not very suitable for new players due to the mechanical complexity, although there is no rule against it. Please use this page to learn what is and is not allowed in Complex games.

Roles

  • Complex Games may only use the roles and modifiers listed above.
    • Roles may be hybrid. In Complex Games, some players should be Vanilla Townies - although there is not a hard floor here - and there is no limit on roles and modifiers.
    • Serial Killers are not allowed in Micro games. They are allowed in Mini games but must be announced during signups. They are allowed in Larges and do not require an announcement. Multiball - when there are two or more Mafia factions - is allowed in Large games only, and requires an announcement.
    • Flavor should not impact gameplay.
    • Experimental roles are allowed in Complex Games - the Experimental Role List has no substantial effect on gameplay but indicates roles that are currently being "trialed" for Normal Games. The Experimental Role List should be expected to change.

Complex Games must follow all rules of Normal Games.

Setup Rules

  • Flips do not reveal private information, such as Mafia partners or investigation results.
  • Roles may not self-target, including roles like Doctor.
  • Games may have any size and faction ratio.

Role Descriptions

Role Description Alignment
 Vanilla No abilities. Town version is called Vanilla Townie, and Mafia version is called Mafia Goon. Any
 Bodyguard Protects a player at night - if they are targeted by a kill, the Bodyguard dies instead. Any
 Bulletproof Will survive any nightkills targeting them. Any
 Cop Investigates a player at night to find their alignment. Any
 Doctor Protects a player at night from a nightkill. Any
 Friendly Neighbor Targets a player at night. That player is informed that the Friendly Neighbor is Town. Town Only
 Gunsmith Investigates a player at night to learn if they have a gun. This is based on their role. Most mafia members have guns and most Town members don't, but please check the Gunsmith page for more details. Any
 Innocent Child Can confirm themselves as Town upon request to the moderator. Town Only
 Jailkeeper Protects a player at night and prevents them from using any abilities. Any
 Juggernaut When this player performs the factional kill, it cannot be prevented. Mafia Only
 Macho Cannot be protected from nightkills. Any
 Mason There must be at least two Masons if one exists. Masons know other Masons are Town and can communicate with them in a Private Topic. Town Only
 Neapolitan Investigates a player at night to learn whether or not they are a Vanilla Townie. Any
 Neighborizer Targets a player at night to add them to a Private Topic where they can communicate. Any
 Roleblocker Roleblocks a player at night to prevent them from using any abilities. Any
 Rolecop Investigates a player at night to learn their role, but not their alignment. Any
 Tracker Tracks a player at night to learn who - if anyone - they visited. Any
 Vanilla Cop Investigates a player at night to learn if they are Vanilla or not. Any
 Vigilante Kills a player at night. Any
 Watcher Watches a player at night to learn who - if anyone - visited them. Any
 Alien Kidnaps a player at night to make all actions targeting them fail, and prevent them from using any abilities. Any
 Ascetic Any non-killing actions which target this player will fail. Any
 Babysitter Protects a player at night from a nightkill. If the Babysitter dies, their target will also die. Any
 Commuter Commutes at night to make any actions targeting them fail. Any
 Detective Investigates a player at night to discover if they have killed another player. Any
 Fruit Vendor Gives another player fruit at night, which has no effect. Any
 Hider Hides behind another player at night, which protects it from nightkills. However, if its target dies, the Hider will also die. Any
 Jack of All Trades Has multiple abilities that can only be used once. These abilities can be any which are otherwise legal, and are decided by the moderator during setup design. Any
 Messenger Targets a player at night. That player is anonymously sent a message of the Messenger's choice. Any
 Motion Detector Investigates a player at night to detect if that player has used an ability or had an ability used on them. Any
 Neighbor There must be at least two Neighbors if one exists. Neighbors are able to communicate with each other in Private Topics. There can exist multiple separate Neighborhoods. Any
 Ninja When this player performs the factional kill, it cannot be observed. Any
 PT Cop Investigates a player at night to discover if that player has access to any game-related Private Topics. Any
 Reporter Investigates a player to discover if that player used an ability that night. Any
 Rolestopper Targets a player at night to block any actions used on that player. Any
 Role Watcher Watches a player at night to discover what roles, if any, visited that player, but not their identities. Any
 Shield Targets a player at night. If they target a player who performs a kill that night, the Shield will die instead of the intended target. Any
 Traffic Analyst Investigates a player at night to discover if that player is able to communicate with other players privately. Notably, this doesn't include Private Topics with only one player left alive. Any
 Universal Backup Inherits the role of the first non-Vanilla player of their alignment to die. Any
 Action Detector Targets a player to learn both whether or not they used an ability that night, and whether or not an ability was used on them that night. Any
 Backup Inherits a specific role if the player who has it dies, which is determined by the moderator during setup design. Any
 Checker Targets a player at night. This has no effect, but the Checker learns if their action succeeded or not. Any
 Companion Is informed that another player is Town-aligned. Any
 Enabler Enables a specific role, which is determined by the moderator during setup design. If this player dies, players with that ability won't be able to use it. Any
 Encryptor If daytalk is not enabled by default, this player enables daytalk in any Private Topics they have access to as long as they are alive. Any
 Finder Investigates a player to learn if they have a specific role, which is determined by the moderator during setup design. Any
 Follower Tracks a player to discover what kind of ability that player used, if any, that night. Any
 Godfather A Mafia player which investigates as Town if targeted by a Cop. The moderator must announce it at the start of the game if one exists. Mafia Only
 Goon Cop Investigates a player at night to learn whether or not they are a Mafia Goon. Any
 Informed Has access to additional information - usually in their Role PM, but they can find out later if modifiers are used. Any
 Inspector Investigates a player to discover if an ability was used on that player that night. Any
 Inventor Can give a 1-shot ability to another player during the night. This ability is determined by the moderator during setup design. Any
 Masonizer Targets a player at night to add them to a Private Topic where they can communicate, if they are town. The target is also informed the Masonizer is town, but if this role targets non-town it dies and its action fails. Town Only
 Miller A Town player which investigates as Mafia if targeted by a Cop. Town Only
 Modifier Cop Investigates a player to learn which modifiers they have, if any. Any
 Observer Watches a player to discover what kind of ability was used on that player, if any, that night. Any
 Psychologist Investigates a player to discover if that player has the ability to kill, but hasn't done it yet. Any
 Role Guard Targets a player to inform them what roles, if any, targeted them that night. Any
 Role-Immune Immune to a specific role, which is determined by the moderator during setup design. If that role targets this player, their action will fail. Any
 Security Guard Targets a player to inform them who, if anyone, targeted them that night. Any
 Strengthener Targets a player at night to ensure their ability succeeds, if they use one. Any
 Traitor A Mafia player which doesn't have access to the Mafia Private Topic. The rest of the mafia know a Traitor exists, but not who it is. If the Traitor is the last Mafia alive, they will be endgamed. Mafia Only
 Universal Finder Investigates a player at night, while also sending the moderator a specific role. Will be informed whether or not their target has this role. Any
 Vengeful If this player is eliminated, they can kill another player before dying. Town Only
 Visionary Watches a player to inform them what kind of ability was used on them, if any, that night. Any
 Visitor Targets a player at night. This has no effect. Any

Modifier Descriptions

 X-Shot Can only use its ability X amount of times. Any
 Novice Cannot use its ability on Night 1. Any
 Odd-Night/Even-Night Can only use its ability on odd numbered or even numbered nights. Any
 Activated Turns passive roles into active roles, meaning they 'activate' their ability by submitting a night action. Any
 Night X Any role which can only act on specific Nights. For example - a Night 1 modifier, or a Night 3 Night 5 modifier, are both considered Normal in Regular or Complex games. Any
 Disloyal Actions only succeed if they target a player of a different alignment. Any
 Indecisive Cannot target the same player two nights in a row. Any
 Lazy Loses its ability if there is only 1 Mafia player left. Any
 Loyal Actions only succeed if they target a player of the same alignment. Any
 Non-Consecutive Night Cannot use its ability on consecutive nights. Any
 Personal Actions do not affect the Mafia factional kill. Any
 Weak Dies if it targets a member of the Mafia. Any
 Announcing If a player with this modifier uses an ability, their target is informed what ability was used on them, but not who did it. Any
 Combined A modifier which can be used to make two roles into one - in other words, a player with two roles uses them both by targeting one player. The roles are combined together. Any
 Complex Actions only succeed if they target a player that is not Vanilla. Any
 Compulsive Cannot opt to not use their role. Pregame, they have to submit a list of players. If they don't submit an action, the highest living player on the list is targeted. Any
 Loud If a player with this modifier targets another player, the target is informed they were visited by the player with this modifier. Any
 Roaming A player with this modifier cannot target the same player twice. Any
 Simple Actions only succeed if they target a player that is Vanilla. Any
 Simultaneous Can use multiple personal abilities in the same night. Any
 Stealthy An ability with this modifier cannot be detected by action investigation roles. Any
 Strongwilled If a player with this modifier targets another player, it cannot be stopped. Any
