Lazy
Alias: none
Alignment:
Role type:
  • Negative Utility
Choice: none
Status: Regular Normal

A Lazy player or power role loses their ability when there is only one anti-town player remaining.

Normal version

This modifier is allowed in Regular Normal games.

Lazy is a modifier that is applied to a player's role, or to a particular action within that role. It causes the role to fail if there was only one non-town player alive at the start of the phase (typically the start of the Night).

The modifier is primarily intended for games where the size of each faction is known, and thus players know whether their own role is usable. In the case that a player has an active Lazy ability, but does not know how many non-town players remain, they may attempt to use their Lazy ability, but nothing will happen if only one non-town player was alive at the start of the phase. (The player still gets a no result PM if they attempted to use an investigative action, as usual for failing investigative actions.)

Variations

It would be possible for a variant Lazy modifier to look at groupscum only. This might make it more usable by a third-party player.

There is not much point in making a groupscum player lazy; instead, simply make them incapable of Multitasking.

Use & Balance

Making roles Lazy is a good way to stop them taking over in the late-game; roles like Tracker and Town Roleblocker become much more powerful when only one Mafia member is left, so the Lazy modifier can help make those roles much more consistent in their performance. It also acts as a way of reducing the power of a Town-aligned power role; due to its nature of only acting when Town is winning, this simultaneously reduces the setup's swing.

Play Advice

In most cases, it is likely to be a bad idea to delay eliminating scum merely to keep access to your role (unless doing so is part of a breaking strategy). Simply use your role as normal, and look forward to when it stops working (as it means you've almost won).

Sample Role PMs

The standardized Role PM for "Lazy" describes the modifier as follows:

  • As a modifier on an active ability: Each night, if at least two anti-town players were alive at the start of the night, (edit)
  • As a modifier on a passive ability: P2 if at least two anti-town players were alive at the start of the night (edit)

Example (modifying an active ability)

Welcome to game! You are a Town Lazy Jailkeeper.

You have the following active ability:

  • Each night, if at least two anti-town players were alive at the start of the night, you may target a player. Assuming no interference with your action, that player will be protected from kills that night, but all their actions will be blocked that night.

You win if all threats to the town are eliminated and at least one town-aligned player is alive.

Confirm by replying to this PM with a summary of your role.

Example (modifying a passive ability)

Welcome to game! You are a Lazy Bulletproof Townie.

You are protected from kills that target you if at least two anti-town players were alive at the start of the night.

You have no active abilities.

You win if all threats to the town are eliminated and at least one town-aligned player is alive.
