A Defender can attempt to block someone from performing a kill. A blocked kill is considered to not have been performed at all. In effect, it is a kill-specific Roleblocker.

Standard version

A Defender prevents their target from using active killing abilities. Passive killing abilities like Weak or Paranoid Gun Owner are not blocked by a killblocker.

If an X-shot killing role is blocked, their shot is not refunded.

Defenders, being a variant of the normal Roleblocker, are themselves subject to roleblocking (but not defense). A Defender cannot block a kill from an Ascetic. A Strongman will ignore defense.

Variations

Roleblocker is of course the non-kill specific version of this role, the role that this role was derived from.

A Shield is to a Bodyguard as a Defender is to a Doctor.

Use & Balance

Defender can be pretty much seen as a Roleblocker without the liability of blocking actions. However, a Defender can still end up blocking Vigilantes.

A Defender is a deceptively strong Town role, because a blocked kill is basically a guilty.

Sample Role PMs

The standardized Role PM for "Bulwark" describes the action as follows:

  • As a targeted action: that player's active killing abilities will be blocked that night. (edit)

Example (simplest form)

Welcome to game! You are a Town Bulwark.

You have the following active ability:

  • Each Night, you may target a player. Assuming no interference with your action, that player's active killing abilities will be blocked that night.

You win if all threats to the town are eliminated and at least one town-aligned player is alive.

Confirm by replying to this PM with a summary of your role.

Example (with modifiers)

Welcome to game! You are a Town 1-shot Loud Bulwark.

You have the following active ability:

  • Once in the game at Night, you may target a player. Assuming no interference with your action, that player's active killing abilities will be blocked that night. Your target will learn that you targeted them (but not what action you targeted them with).

You win if all threats to the town are eliminated and at least one town-aligned player is alive.

Confirm by replying to this PM with a summary of your role.
