Quickhammer baiting

From MafiaWiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

Quickhammer baiting is a tactic used in (most commonly) 3 town 2 scum endings (sometimes 4:2 or 4:3), to catch the scum in the act of attempting to stage a quickhammer.

This tactic only works when you know for sure that the scum do not have daytalk.

Execution

Commonly, one townie voting another in this sort of ending is seen as a game-losing move, as scum have the numbers to immediately end the game. However, scum can only actually accomplish this if they can both cast votes on the misvoted townie quickly and inconspicuously enough that the voter doesn't unvote.

The limitations of forum mafia mean that scum without daytalk often have to coordinate this game-winning move somehow, often by:

  • Immediately voting the player in question with or without reasons, hoping the other mafia member(s) is online
  • Immediately posting as soon as they see the town-on-town vote, to signal their online status

Quickhammer baiting involves a town player voting someone they believe to be town, to catch scum in the act of attempting to quickhammer. In order to reduce the risk of actual quickhammer, the gambitter will often continually refresh the thread to immediately unvote if they see potential scum posting.

History

In Micro 407: Jurassic Park Mafia, Mathdino voted fferyllt, the town Watcher, in a 3:2 ending. Pine, a mafia member, responded when he was online, saying

This is me not wildly leaping onto this. Your Pine + BBT spec is off target

Three pages popped and I'm on a lunch break. Lots to respond to, this was the only thing that demanded an immediate reply

and later saying

I'm on for the next 15 minutes or so Math, anything urgent you want?

These both signal to his scumpartner, BlueBloodedToffee, when Pine was available to help quickhammer. Mathdino and fferyllt realized the signal and confirmed Pine as scum, going on to win the game for town.
