The Newbie Series Queue is the new iteration of the old Newbie Queue. The Newbie Series exists to provide a predictable schedule of newbie friendly games to the community. Playerlists will be filled by all newbie players signed up and Semi-Experienced (SE) players taken from the SE queue at the time of the game. Games may be filled sooner if at least six newbies are ready to play.

Newbie Series games will launch at a predetermined time decided by the List Moderator, and players and moderators in a Newbie Series game must adhere to newbie friendliness guidelines.

Newbie Series games can be any one of these types of games, at List Moderator discretion:

Players

There are no requirements for joining newbie games and moderators may not take pre-ins or deny sign-ups. There are two ways to join the newbie queue, as a newbie or as a semi-experienced player. Players must join with their main account, hydra or alt accounts are not allowed in Newbie Series games.

There are two basic "types" of players in a Newbie Series Game, Newbies and Semi-Experienced (SE) players.

Newbie

Players may join Newbie Series games as a newbie (by posting something like /in as a newbie) if they meet one of the following criteria:

  • Players playing their first mafia game
  • Players new to the site with 4 completed games or less
  • Players returning to the site with the last completed game over two years ago may join as a newbie for up to two additional games

Semi-Experienced (SE)

Players may join Newbie Series games as a Semi-Experienced player (by posting something like /in as a SE) if they meet the following criteria:

  • Have at least two completed games on-site
  • Have played one game outside of a Newbie Series
  • Are a member of the community with positive standing

SEs are expected to be helpful and courteous to new players, and are expected not to bring negativity to Newbie Series games and are expected to be very careful in following site and game rules. SEs are expected to explain abbreviations and site customs patiently to new players. While all players are expected to play to win the game, SEs should avoid tactics or language that would be discouraging to new players.

Game limits

It is recommended that players playing their first game sign up for only one game until they have completed it. Getting acclimated to the MafiaScum community is important and overloading yourself by playing multiple games at once when you're new may lead to a negative experience.

Each player may be active in a total of eight games of 10 or more players at once, with hydras and alt accounts counting toward this limit.

There is no limit to how many Micro games a player can be active in simultaneously, however keep in mind that excessive flaking or replacing out will likely result in restrictions from joining new games until a player shows they can handle multiple games at once.

Activity requirements

Both newbies and SEs are required to meet minimum activity requirements. Players should be ready to play the game at the scheduled start time and confirm their Role PMs within 24 hours. All players are required to read and confirm their Role PM. Players should post game-advancing content at minimum once every day.

While posting once per day is the minimum requirement, it is recommended to post more frequently as players will expect more from you.

There isn't a recommended post length, but players should understand that different players have different play styles.

Moderators

As we aim to provide a good first experience for new players, moderators of Newbie Series Games are required to have successfully moderated one prior non-Newbie games before joining the list, and have a good overall record of moderation.

  • See the Modding Requirements wiki article to find out all the requirements for modding on the various lists.

To join the waiting list, moderators should post in the Newbie Game List thread ("/in to mod"). When a new game fills up, the List Mod will inform the new moderator, and the moderator can then start the game.

Moderators of Newbie Games must adhere to the following rules:

  1. Once you have determined the setup and assigned players, please PM the data to the ListMod in case you need to be replaced.
  2. YOU MUST USE RANDOM.ORG TO DETERMINE SETUP AND ROLE DISTRIBUTION! Roles/game setup should NEVER be given to players “because they want role X” or "because an all-Vanilla game setup is too boring to Mod".
  3. Newbie games MUST be run with 10 day deadlines for Day 1 and 7 day deadlines per each other game day.
  4. All players MUST read their role PMs. If a player does not read their role PM they are not allowed to play. You may consider requiring players to PM you back a "code word" or their role name that you put in the PM, so that you have reasonable assurance that they read the PM. If you find out at a later time that a player did not read their role PM, please contact the ListMod.
  5. If a player doesn't pick up their role during the confirmation stage you should go back to the first post of the Newbie Game Queue and pick the next unassigned player(s). Remember to post in the Queue thread when you replace/steal somebody!
  6. If you need to replace a player after the game has started, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to ensure that the player you are taking as a replacement is not a Newbie already playing in their first game. Newbies are only allowed to play in ONE GAME AT A TIME. Use the Search function on the boards and check to make sure the replacee is not already playing in their first game. Make sure to check the Queue to see if they have been assigned to a game that hasn't started yet!!
    • Anytime you replace someone, leave the original player's name in the Player List! Otherwise this can be very confusing for the other players when they are trying to reread the thread. Example formats include Replacer, replacing Replaceé or Replaceé Replacer.
  7. Newbies may NOT replace into an SE spot; however, SEs may replace into a Newbie spot at the moderator's discretion.
  8. Role PMs should be as described in this thread. Especially remember not to name or distinguish the Vanilla Townie role PMs in any way. You should post all the PMs in your first or second post. Outguessing the Mod/name claims shouldn't have a place in Newbie Games.
  9. Newbie Mods are expected to check their games DAILY to make sure no requests have been made and to do vote counts.
    • If you are going to be away for an extended time, let the ListMod (or backup Mod) know so that he/she can watch over your games until you return.
  10. Try to do a Vote Count on every page, near the top if possible. If your players are prolific posters this may not be possible - just do the best you can to provide timely, up-to-date vote counts. If a lot of votes have changed in the course of a page, you may wish to do them even more often. Always provide a regular vote count during deadlines!
  11. Prod players by PM if they haven't posted for 36 hours (unless they warn you ahead of time).
    • Remember that deadlines in Eliminate-or-Lose situations should not have a reduced number of votes to eliminate, or Scum can win automatically.
  12. Don't worry about not having a 'theme' or flavor; that's actually better for Newbie Games, so they stay as uncomplicated as possible. Any flavor should be as close to Normal Mafia flavor as possible.
