Gladiator
Alias:
  • Kombatant
Alignment:
Role type:
  • Voting
Choice:
  • Day
Status: Known

During the day the Gladiator can choose someone. Usually done in the same manner a daykill is, they can CHALLENGE <TARGET PLAYER>. All votes are reset. Only two players are now votable, the Gladiator and their target. It is almost always one-shot.

Standard version

During the day, a Gladiator may challenge a player. After challenging a player, votes will be reset and only the Gladiator and the player the Gladiator challenged will be eligible for elimination.

Variations

  • Sometimes the Gladiator can choose more than one person
  • Some mods give the Gladiator a time limit as to when they can use their power, like they cannot use their power past a midway point towards the deadline. (Imagine a 14 day deadline. They could not use their power past 7 days into the Day Phase)
  • Sometimes the Gladiator's ability cannot be used in ELo.

Use & Balance

The Gladiator is an amazingly strong role[disputed] and should be used sparingly or not outside Role Madness games. In the hands of a strong town player who is in good standing (or a town player that has been confirmed), it should almost always spell death for their opponent. However, the possibility is always there for the tables to be turned. As a scum role, it should be used very carefully, or with a lot of flair, depending on personal style.

History

The role was inspired by a unique game mechanic in Mortal Kombat Mafia[1]
There is also a similar mechanic in the High Noon setup.[2]

Sample Role PMs

The sample Role PM for "Gladiator" describes the action as follows:

  • As a targeted day action: you and that player will be the only eliminations allowed that day. (edit)

Example (simplest form)

Welcome to game! You are a Town Gladiator.

You have the following active ability:

  • Each Day, you may target a player. Assuming no interference with your action, you and that player will be the only eliminations allowed that day.

You win if all threats to the town are eliminated and at least one town-aligned player is alive.

Confirm by replying to this PM with a summary of your role.

Example (with modifiers)

Welcome to game! You are a Town 1-shot Loud Gladiator.

You have the following active ability:

  • Once in the game at Day, you may target a player. Assuming no interference with your action, you and that player will be the only eliminations allowed that day. Your target will learn that you targeted them (but not what action you targeted them with).

You win if all threats to the town are eliminated and at least one town-aligned player is alive.
