A secret role is a role whose abilities are kept secret from the player. The player is made aware of their overall alignment, however usually some sort of passive ability is hinted at in their PM and must be discovered on it's own. Examples of passive abilities include extra votes, no votes, or investigates guilty.
Backup roles may be kept secret from players until an event causes them to be activated.
