Distancing is a common tactic to avoid pairing with other members of your faction. It is most commonly done by anti-Town factions such as Mafia, but can also be used by Masons to avoid being night-killed as a confirmed pro-town player, if their Mason buddy has been eliminated.

It involves putting oneself at odds with one's partner(s), either by disagreement over a third party, or by direct conflict against each other. The effectiveness of this technique is often based on timing and the quality of performance from the players distancing themselves from each other.

At times, such heavy distancing is used that it leads to the Town voting one of the distancers out. This is a common tactic among anti-town factions, known as bussing.
