Aloof is a role modifier that prevents the player from being killed or interacted with through normal means. Typically, the only ways an Aloof player can interact with the game are by posting or by using any special actions they may have. This modifier is virtually only ever seen in setups that are explicitly designed around one or more Aloof roles. The Aloof aspect to the role is also almost universally mod-confirmed at the start of the game.

Standard version

An Aloof role can't vote or be voted, eliminated, killed, or otherwise targeted by any role. Additionally, Aloof players do not count towards their faction in terms of parity, for example, if one Aloof townie, a regular townie, and one mafioso are alive at the beginning of a phase, it will be treated as a mafia victory.

Variations

Although an Aloof role can't be targeted by default, there may be roles designed to be able to interact with them in the setup. Additionally, an Aloof player may be allowed to vote in some circumstances, but rarely to the same extent or using the same means as the other players.

Although Aloof roles are essentially deathproof, there are usually measures to limit their power, such as being limited in when, what, or how much they post or there being a potential game event or action that can render them moot.

Town Aloof roles are often mod-confirmed as town, but this isn't necessarily always the case.

Use & Balance

Aloof is virtually never seen in ordinary setups, where it would be overpowered and arguably bastard. Instead, it is typically added in setups that are designed around it. Aloof roles are often found in games that don't entirely follow the "one account per player slot" role; for instance, if one player playing on two different accounts is part of the setup, one of those accounts will have an Aloof modifier to prevent broken interactions. It is also seen for roles whose actions are so centralizing and important to the game that the setup would break if it were to get killed early.

Sample Role PMs

The standardized Role PM for "Aloof" describes the modifier as follows:

  • As a modifier on a single ability: You cannot vote or be voted, eliminated, killed, or targeted in any way by other players. (edit)
  • As a modifier that affects all abilities: You cannot vote or be voted, eliminated, killed, or targeted in any way by other players. (edit)

Example (modifying a single ability)

Welcome to game! You are a Town Aloof Jailkeeper.

You have the following active ability:

  • Each Night, you may target a player. Assuming no interference with your action, that player will be protected from kills that night, but all their actions will be blocked that night. You cannot vote or be voted, eliminated, killed, or targeted in any way by other players.

You win if all threats to the town are eliminated and at least one town-aligned player is alive.

Confirm by replying to this PM with a summary of your role.

Example (affecting all abilities)

Welcome to game! You are a Town Aloof Jack of All Trades Tracker Doctor.

You cannot vote or be voted, eliminated, killed, or targeted in any way by other players.

You have the following active abilities, but may use only one per Night:

  • Once in the game at night, you may target a player. Assuming no interference with your action, you will learn who that player targeted that night. (You will get "no result" if this action is blocked.)
  • Once in the game at night, you may target a player. Assuming no interference with your action, that player will be protected from one kill that night.

You win if all threats to the town are eliminated and at least one town-aligned player is alive.
