A Coroner is a role that can target a dead player to discern information about them.

This role can be seen in games with limited reveals, No Reveal, or potentially bastard reveals (in which role flips are not necessarily accurate). The typical function of a Coroner is such that they learn the full-reveal flip of the player in a limited- or No Reveal game. If a game is advertised as having full role reveals, a Coroner probably implies the existence of a Janitor.

Coroners are generally Town-aligned.

Variations

Exactly what a Coroner learns has been known to vary:

  • In some games the moderator will publicly announce the full role reveal of the target after the target is investigated by a Coroner.
  • One variant which turns up in two-mafia games is a combination janitor/coroner who learns what the other janitor hides, possibly justified in flavor by them sharing a dump site.
  • In some games Coroners can investigate dead players to determine some clue as to who killed them. This has potential to be more powerful than a Watcher or a Tracker pending the type of evidence and how long it lasts on the corpse
  • In other cases, the roles of the dead player is only revealed if the coroner remains alive. In this case, it can be Mafia aligned, creating a dilemma upon revelation.
