Beware since scum can also breadcrumb with low risk, since they can simply avoid revealing it if the claim becomes undesirable in future.

Breadcrumbing is when you put very subtle hints in a post so you can refer to it later. For example, a cop can say this:

I haven't played with anyone here before, should be fun.

Anyone here a total newb? Myself and the other guy are experienced, let me know if you have any questions.

Conversation hasn't really started yet, so it's random vote time. Obviously, the guy above me can't be scum, his avatar is too cute. Perhaps it's a ploy, though...

The term refers to the story of Hansel and Gretel who intentionally dropped a trail of breadcrumbs to lead the way home in a manner that would be undetected by their evil stepmother.

Breadcrumbs can be an excellent tool for townies to use to verify that they are indeed the role that they claim (or rather to show that they have committed to claiming that role well in advance of being forced to claim).

A good breadcrumb will combine both aspects and thus be undetectable by scum (usually also means undetectable by townies), but also show that the player has committed themselves to a role.

Beware since scum can also breadcrumb with low risk, since they can simply avoid revealing it if the claim becomes undesirable in future.
