The Odds is an open setup based on a mechanic designed by Ether in 2008. The setup itself has changed a few times since then, and will probably keep changing, but all versions have one thing in common. Different players have different chances of being scum, and those chances are publicly revealed at the start of the game.

Setup

The mafia's factional roleblock can be used alongside a kill, and takes priority over the jailkeeper's block. Mafia have daytalk.

All 10 players are assigned a percentage chance of being scum, between 5% and 35%. There's no real reason to randomize this: some people enjoy being town or scum more than others, and all percentages are revealed publicly at the start of the game. Alignments are determined randomly based off of these.

Percentage Numbers
5% 1
10% 2-3
15% 4-6
15% 7-9
20% 10-13
20% 14-17
25% 18-22
25% 23-27
30% 28-33
35% 34-40

To find alignments, two numbers are generated between 1 and 40, rerolling if the same person draws scum twice. The jailkeeper is picked from the townies left over, with a 1 in 8 chance for each. (For example, if you generate 32 and 6, then the 30% player and the first 15% player will be scum. If you generate a number between 1 and 8 after that, and get 4, then the first 20% player will be the jailkeeper.) Note that even the player with the highest odds of being scum will still be town almost 2/3rds of the time.

Sample Role PMs

Mafia Goon

Your odds of being scum were [...]%, and those were enough. You are a Mafia Goon, alongside [...].

Between the two of you, you have a single roleblock that either of you can use on any one night. This will resolve before any other night actions, and can be used alongside your factional kill. The two of you may communicate in private at any time.

You win when the living mafia members equal or outnumber the town.

Vanilla Townie

Your odds of being scum were [...]%, but that wasn't enough to send you to the dark side. You are a Vanilla Townie.

You win when the mafia is eliminated.

Jailkeeper

Your odds of being scum were [...]%, but that wasn't nearly enough to turn you against the town. You are the Jailkeeper.

Every night, you can target a player. The mafia will not be able to kill it that night, and any night action it takes will not be carried out. (However, if you're roleblocked then this ability will fail and the mafia will be able to kill freely.)

You win when the mafia is eliminated.
