Various [http://forum.mafiascum.net/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=39739 statistics] demonstrate that, while the individual subsetups are a bit less so, Matrix6 as a whole is quite well-balanced, with a town winrate of 45.0% over 449 games. However, a Day 1 claim strategy has been developed that purports to benefit town by limiting scum's options later on. The gist is that the BP (if any) claims, followed by the Tracker if there isn't one. If there's a BP, they become confirmed town for at least two days (assuming scum does not counterclaim, as 1v1s generally benefit town). If there isn't, the Tracker knows there's a Doctor and can play [[Follow the Cop]] (though being a Tracker vs two scum means this isn't perfect), or the Jailkeeper knows he has no interference; either way scum cannot get away with claiming BP later in the game. While the jury is still out as to whether this strategy is truly helpful to town's winrate, most agree that the newbie setup should not have such a fixed claim strategy present, and so [[3d3]] and later [[2d3]] were developed as the new Newbie setup.

In late January 2014, [http://forum.mafiascum.net/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=37156 a slightly more formal analysis] of the setup began, which continued in [http://forum.mafiascum.net/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=39739 a new topic]. As of June 19th 2014 with 133 completed Newbie games using Matrix6, the town has a near-perfect win rate of 49.6%. However, the individual setups are showing signs of less-desirable winrates:
*Row 1: 65.2% (23 games)
*Row 2: 60.0% (20 games)
*Row 3: 40.7% (27 games)
*Col A: 33.3% (15 games)
*Col B: 53.6% (28 games)
*Col C: 40.0% (20 games)
While subsetup B appears nice and balanced, the other five are all at least 10% away from optimal, and two of them (1 and A) approach 2/3 and 1/3.

Matrix6 was a primary Newbie Setup, trying to address flaws in previous setups. The preceding Newbie Setup was 2of4, but the setup contained unbalanced possible setups, and was thus phased out. Matrix6 itself did quite well, in both balance and longevity, before being replaced by 2d3.

The first Matrix6 newbie game was Newbie 1370, and the last was Newbie 1844.

Setup name

The name of the setup is derived from the matrix that illustrates the variable roles in the setup, and the fact that there are 6 possible setups.

Setup

A B C
1 Town Jailkeeper Vanilla Townie Mafia Goon
2 Mafia Roleblocker Town Cop Town Doctor
3 1-shot Bulletproof Townie Mafia Goon Town Tracker

The setup is determined by randomly selecting one row or one column from the above table, then filling in the remaining 6 roles with 5 Vanilla Townies and 1 Mafia Goon to create a 7-town, 2-mafia setup.

For example, if Row 1 (Town Jailkeeper, Vanilla Townie, and Mafia Goon) was chosen, the full setup will be 1 Town Jailkeeper, 6 Vanilla Townies, and 2 Mafia Goons.

Balance discussion/statistics

The Mafia Roleblocker is allowed to both submit the nightkill and perform his Roleblocker action. In addition, the Roleblocker is stated to resolve before the Jailkeeper. This only matters in the case where the Roleblocker and Jailkeeper target one another, and even in this case only matters if the Roleblocker was also going to submit the kill (the end result being that the kill will not be jailed).

The Bulletproof Townie's bulletproof cannot be roleblocked, as it is a reflexive action.

Various statistics demonstrate that, while the individual subsetups are a bit less so, Matrix6 as a whole is quite well-balanced, with a town winrate of 45.0% over 449 games. If there isn't, the Tracker knows there's a Doctor and can play Follow the Cop (though being a Tracker vs two scum means this isn't perfect), or the Jailkeeper knows he has no interference; either way scum cannot get away with claiming BP later in the game. While the jury is still out as to whether this strategy is truly helpful to town's winrate, most agree that the newbie setup should not have such a fixed claim strategy present, and so 3d3 and later 2d3 were developed as the new Newbie setup.
