Bearer

Bearer
Alias: none
Alignment: any
Role type:
  • Unpowered
Choice:
  • None (but the Artifact might confer one)
Status: Untested

A Bearer (or Artifact-Bearer, or X-Bearer) holds an Artifact, which is an item which may be reused several times and is separate from the role that holds it.

The specific artifact's text should be known to whoever bears it (like how a Jack of All Trades knows what their abilities are). If the Artifact is given to someone else, they should receive a copy of the Artifact's text.

Standard version

An Artifact-Bearer has no power by itself. Instead, it signifies the player starts the game with an Artifact. If the Artifact has some given name or flavor (such as a tool, weapon, land, magic gem, etc.), the role should be named accordingly.

Artifacts might confer night actions onto their owners (such as giving them a Rolecop action by using the Artifact), passive abilities (such as Asceticizing them), or modifiers (such as making their night actions Loyal). In more complicated use cases, Artifacts may have whole mechanics assigned to them and conditional effects (see below for an example)

Variations

Inventors give inventions, which are one-shot items unlike Artifacts and normally cannot be continually given to other players. Artifacts might have a "destroy if" clause baked into the artifact, but this is not inherent to the artifact.

Use & Balance

An Artifact-Bearer is effectively Named if they lose their Artifact. The Artifact itself is what holds the power, and it can have any text at moderator discretion.

Giving someone an Artifact without some means of passing it is essentially giving that person a Power Role. Unless you have a specific reason for doing so, just give them the PR.

Examples

Basic Artifact Example

You have received a Simple Cop Potato Artifact.

At night, you can use this artifact and send the mod the name of a player. Assuming no interference with your action, you will learn if they are Mafia or not, and give them this artifact. The artifact will fail if the target is not a Vanilla member of their faction.

Complex Artifact Example

You have received a Guardian of the Innocent Artifact.

This artifact starts with a charge counter on it. At the end of any day where you are not voting the elimination target, or where you are voting the elimination target but they are not aligned with the Town, this artifact gains another charge counter.

At night, you can use this artifact, spend one charge counter from it, and send the mod the name of a player. Assuming no interference with your action, you will take one kill that targeted your target. If this ability successfully protects your target from a kill, your target will receive this artifact. At night, you can also use this artifact, spend three charge counters from it, and send the mod the name of a player. Assuming no interference with your action, you will grant your target the Loved modifier, and give this artifact to a random Town-aligned player.

Enchanted Fae Bauble

You have received an Enchanted Fae Bauble Artifact.

This artifact has a mysterious effect. This effect may be a targeted active effect, untargeted active effect, or a passive effect. You don't know what effect the Enchanted Fae Bauble has.

At night, you can use this artifact and send the mod the name of a player. If the Enchanted Fae Bauble has a targeted active effect, you will use that active effect on your target. If the Enchanted Fae Bauble has an untargeted active effect, you will activate that effect.

Sample Role PMs

The standardized Role PM for "Bearer" describes the passive ability as follows:

  • As an unmodified passive ability: You hold a predetermined artifact. (edit)
  • As a passive ability with a modifier: You will be given the nth predetermined artifact OR a predetermined artifact on day n. (edit)

Example (unmodified)

Welcome to game! You are a Town Bearer.

You hold a predetermined artifact.

You have no active abilities.

You win if all threats to the town are eliminated and at least one town-aligned player is alive.

Confirm by replying to this PM with a summary of your role.

Example (modified)

Welcome to game! You are a Town Novice Bearer.

You will be given a predetermined artifact from Night 2 onwards.

You have no active abilities.

You win if all threats to the town are eliminated and at least one town-aligned player is alive.
