MafiaWiki talk:To-do

From MafiaWiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

From the PM:

Right, I've moved the wiki flat files over to /mafiawiki and moved MediaWiki to /wiki. The change on the wiki shouldn't be noticeable unless I've messed something up (jeep might want to check to make sure I haven't...).

Anyway, Mr. Flay and I have been playing a bit with MediaWiki, but now I want to invite the newly formed Wiki Group to register and test as well. Once you've registered we'll set you up as a Sysop (you'll probably only ever need this added access for the few protected pages we might have).
Before we get started on the bulk of the moving, there's probably a few things we should discuss, such as:
Categories - What categories do we need? (Roles, Rules/Gameplay, Games, Setups, Users, Forum, Wiki... what else?) Format and Style - How should pages be formatted? Within a category, I'd like to keep things pretty standard. Also some style conventions... how to name pages, stuff like that. Stuff We Should Have - I've mentioned one above; I'd really like to see us start getting some information on the games we've played on the wiki. I think one of the next things I will play with is making pages for the Open Games... mess around with the format and such. Likewise with the setups, I'd like to get the various Open Setups from the discussion thread on the wiki for easy reference. What else?

Anyway, that's enough to get us started for now.

Stoofer's random thoughts about the new Wiki

moved from User_talk:Mr. Flay

For want of a better place, I thought this would be a good spot to note down some of the thoughts I've had about the new wiki, now that I've been playing with it for a couple of hours

  1. It seems to me to be pretty far advanced - what's stopping you from making it go live and freezing the old wiki completely
  2. Will [wiki] tags on the forum point here?
  3. Is the picture set in stone? Why not have the forum logo?
  4. Why can't we upload (not complaining as such, I'd just be interested in the reasons)
  5. Who are the sysops and what are their powers (I know what a sysop is)?
  6. Is it OK to pester you with these sorts of questions?

Stoofer 10:06, 31 January 2007 (MST)

  1. mith just locked the old wiki from editing and we should be able to swap the links pretty soon. My work has exploded on me so I haven't been able to do much transwiki'ing lately as I'd like, so I'm really glad to see other people stepping up. :)
  2. yep, that's a simple code switch I'm told.
  3. No, I think that was more a test edit to have something there when the then-test wiki was set up. We could certainly talk about swapping it for something more useful.
  4. I'm not sure if mith is comfortable with adding that capability or not. Will see if he'll weigh in on it, as I would find it useful too.
  5. See Special:Listusers. IP/anonymous users can edit most pages. Regular logged in users can edit almost any page, make their own custom CSS/javascript, keep a watchlist of articles they like to watch for changes in, have a talk page, etc. Sysops can protect/unprotect pages from general editing, delete/undelete pages, block/unblock users/spammers (incl. IPs if needed), edit the MediaWiki interface pages like the sidebar and page headers/footers, and the global CSS/javascript. Bureaucrats can make more sysops. I'm sure there's other actions, but those are the most common ones.
  6. Answered on my talk page. :) -- Mr. Flay 07:13, 1 February 2007 (MST)

User override for skins?

I don't have a lot of experience with CSS, but I was going to try and experiment a bit with the skins. It doesn't appear, though, that this installation of the MediaWiki software imports the user's CSS overrides ([[User:<blah>/<skinname>.css]]). It'd make experimenting a lot easier without someone having to edit the site-wide css ;). (apparently I didn't sign, before --Azkar 12:22, 2 February 2007 (MST))

Yeah, according to http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:User_style#General it's not turned on by default, I'll see if jeep/mith think it's a good idea. -- Mr. Flay 14:12, 1 February 2007 (MST)

Transwiki

"needs to have all redlinks filled in." Really? Mr Stoofer 06:36, 6 February 2007 (MST)

Probably, since all redlinks there are actual wiki pages on the old wiki. When the [wiki] tag is flipped over we don't want any confusion, right? Obviously many of the CamelCase ones will be redirects... or am I missing something? -- Mr. Flay 13:46, 6 February 2007 (MST)
Well, there is some real junk on this list. I could go through and give you loads of examples but heres a clear one: Great White HaXX0r Krew. Or is this sort of garbage welcome on MafiaWiki? --Mr Stoofer 02:16, 7 February 2007 (MST)
Ehhh, I could take a miss on that one. I never actually loaded the page before...feel free to drop it from the list if it doesn't make sense to you. If someone objects to losing a page, we can always recreate it later if it's actually useful. It's a wiki. :) -- Mr. Flay 18:40, 8 February 2007 (MST)

protecting page...

this page seems semi-official... i've already protected the page from IP edits just b/c it seems to be a hot spot for spammers, but should this page be fully protected?..
