The Watcher is most commonly understood to be an information role that can target a person at night and learn who else targeted (or visited) that person on that same night.
The Watcher is an informative role that can target a player at Night and learn who, if anybody, targeted that player the same Night (but not what actions were performed on that player).

The role can be contrasted with the Tracker, who tracks a player to see who they target, rather than who targets them.
Variations
The Watcher has very few variants; however, there are many related Roles:

*The Tracker, who learns who a player targeted, not who targeted that player.
*The Voyeur, who learns what actions were performed on that player, but not who performed them.

Basically some people consider the Reporter role to be the original form of Watcher role while "Night Watchman" is the name for new variant that sees who else visits their target on the same night.  The original version of watcher (reporter) has not been as commonly used over time as the new night watchman versionAnd so the new version has become the more expected and commonly seen understanding of what the watcher role is.
Previously, the Watcher meant someone who could tell if someone performed an action at Night; this role is now referred to as Reporter and is not commonly used.  There is discussion about this here <!-- (changed to point to archive until plainlinks work again) topic-->

Use and Balance
Despite being an informative role, the Watcher functions mainly as a protective one.  If the Watcher watches someone who is killed the same Night, then they should see the person who performed the kill in their report.  Similarly, if the Watcher's target claims to have been roleblocked the next Day, then the Watcher can expect to find a Roleblocker in their report.

There has been at least one discussion <!-- (changed to point to archive until plainlinks work again) topic--> on the Watcher role.
As a protective role, a Watcher is worse than a Doctor; however, a Watcher is capable of catching a Mafia Roleblocker who is visiting their target.

Mafia Watchers do exist; they can be used to find protective roles (by targetting likely Doctor targets), or to give foreknowledge of possible investigations (by watching a Mafia partner).  In a setup with multiple killers, a Mafia Watcher may be able to identify opposing killers.

*See also the Voyeur role, which can learn other actions that targeted their own target, but not the names of the other players that targeted their target.
Play Advice
Much of the same advice for Doctors applies to Watchers; try to target the person who is likely to be killed.  However, Watchers can benefit from also targetting someone and seeing who visits them.  Like a Tracker's reports, a Watcher's reports can become more valuable after their is more information about what roles the people named in the report are.

Watcher
Alias:
 • Night watchman
Alignment:
Role type:
 • Informative
Choice:
 • Night

The Watcher is an informative role that can target a player at Night and learn who, if anybody, targeted that player the same Night (but not what actions were performed on that player).

Variations

The Watcher has very few variants; however, there are many related Roles:

 • The Tracker, who learns who a player targeted, not who targeted that player.
 • The Voyeur, who learns what actions were performed on that player, but not who performed them.

Previously, the Watcher meant someone who could tell if someone performed an action at Night; this role is now referred to as Reporter and is not commonly used. There is discussion about this here
