Vain is a role modifier that causes the player to die if targeting a Town player. Vain is inherently investigative despite being negative utility, if a Vain player survives after targeting a player, they are confirmed to not be Town.

It is the inverse of Weak.

Note that if a Vain action is blocked, the Vain part of the role is blocked too, and thus the Vain role user can survive targeting a Town player in this situation.

Standard version

A Vain role dies upon targeting anyone with a pro-Town wincon (this includes Town Miller, but not Mafia Godfather or Serial Killer) unless their action is blocked. If a Vain role dies, their actions still occur.

Variations

Vain may apply if the target appears as Town, instead of if the target is Town, so targeting a Godfather would result in death while targeting a Miller would not.

Sample Role PMs

The standardized Role PM for "Vain" describes the modifier as follows:

  • As a modifier on a single ability: If you use this action on a player who is aligned with the Town, you will die. (edit)
  • As a modifier that affects all abilities: If you use an action on a player who is aligned with the Town, you will die. (edit)

Example (modifying a single ability)

Welcome to game! You are a Town Vain Jailkeeper.

You have the following active ability:

  • Each Night, you may target a player. Assuming no interference with your action, that player will be protected from kills that night, but all their actions will be blocked that night. If you use this action on a player who is aligned with the Town, you will die.

You win if all threats to the town are eliminated and at least one town-aligned player is alive.

Confirm by replying to this PM with a summary of your role.

Example (affecting all abilities)

Welcome to game! You are a Town Vain Jack of All Trades Tracker Doctor.

If you use an action on a player who is aligned with the Town, you will die.

You have the following active abilities, but may use only one per Night:

  • Once in the game at night, you may target a player. Assuming no interference with your action, you will learn who that player targeted that night. (You will get "no result" if this action is blocked.)
  • Once in the game at night, you may target a player. Assuming no interference with your action, that player will be protected from one kill that night.

You win if all threats to the town are eliminated and at least one town-aligned player is alive.

Confirm by replying to this PM with a summary of your role.
