Grand Idea Mafia is a semi-open setup, based on Great Idea Mafia, Greater Idea Mafia and Greatest Idea Mafia, designed with more player-input, randomness, and adding a much larger Upick-esque role creation ability.

To begin the setup, the moderator uses a random number generator corresponding to roles from the Grand Idea Mafia thread to assign every player a role. Once the mod has randomized a setup that he feels isn't broken, and uses his better judgement to re-roll as necessary, he may begin assigning roles. At the beginning of the game the mod will notify the town of his parameters for an un-broken game (such as no less than half+1 town, no more than a certain number of alignments, etc.) and open the game.

If a post without a role is rolled, interpret it as a Vanilla Townie. If a post with a role but no alignment is rolled, the alignment is up to the moderator's discretion (Town if there is no moderator).

There are over 11 thousand role cards. The possibilities are grand.

Mechanics

  • Roles are assigned to players via the Random.org List Randomizer.
  • Balance is explicitly not guaranteed.
  • Because of the special forum-post role mechanic, many new and bastard roles are possible given certain creator's imaginations. The following is a list of blacklisted combinations decided upon by the major contributors to the setup.

Setup Design

The Grand Idea setup was invented as a replacement to Greatest Idea, and originally intended to be able to be played mod-less. The role list is forever-expanding at the whims of BBmolla, and those who continue to make new roles. The setup is intentionally bastard-esque and crazy and typically designed for less serious playstyle, typically being used in Micro Games.

Some Grand Idea Clauses

These are all optional. They should be listed in signups as they affect the Grand Idea setup.

Korina's Cult Clause

If there is no Cult Leader or equivalent generated, a random cult role becomes a Cult Leader.

Dupes Clause

Reroll all roles that are repeated anywhere on the same page or is posted as a pagebottom and then a pagetop in the next page. Alignments aren't taken into account for the Dupes Clause.

Mason Feasibility Clause

All Mason-like and Neighbor groups have an extra member rolled randomly out of eligible players (this adds to their role). This is to ensure Mason-likes and Neighbors don't end up being named roles by accident. This doesn't apply to Masonizer or Neighborizer type roles that can add players to their Mason-like or Neighbor groups.

This overrides any mod notes saying to add a Mason-like and Neighbor role to a random eligible player, as this clause is intended to codify those mod notes.

Some Grand Idea Mutations

These drastically change how Grand Idea is played and are effectively new setups using the Grand Idea Mafia thread.

Grander Idea Mafia

This applies Greater Idea Mafia card picking rules to Grand Idea Mafia.

Each player is randomly assigned two role cards from the Grand Idea Mafia thread. They must choose one to keep and discard the other. Once every player has chosen a role card - and there is at least one antitown role in the game (if all town, abandon or reshuffle) - any roles with partners are informed of their partners.

At the start of Day 1, every player's discarded card is publicly revealed.

Grandest Idea Mafia

This applies Greatest Idea Mafia card picking rules to Grand Idea Mafia.

Each player is randomly assigned three role cards from the Grand Idea Mafia thread. Two of these three cards are combined to produce a player's role and alignment, and the other card is discarded. Two cards must be used for role and alignment, so no player may choose a single card for both role and alignment. Once every player has chosen their two cards - and there is at least one antitown role in the game (if all town, abandon or reshuffle) - all players inform the moderator of their role/alignment combination and any roles with partners are informed of their partners.

At the start of Day 1, every player's discarded card is publicly revealed.

Grand Idea GPick

This adds a uPick-esque element to Grand Idea while still maintaining randomness. Each player picks a page number in the Grand Idea Mafia thread to have their role rolled from. For example, if you submit page 1, your role will be rolled from post #0 to post #24 in the GIM thread.
