Confrontation Mafia, by PolarBoy with thanks to cuban smoker

As you walk down the street heading back home, you're pretty pleased with yourself. The hit went well, the townies suspect nothing, the Godfather will be pleased. You hear a footstep behind you. You quickly turn around, pointing your gun at the source of the sound. By his bearing, and the gun pointed at your own head, you know he's a mobster, but with whom? He might be a member of your own family, but you can't be sure in the dark. Do you fire?

Rules

Players receive a PM informing them which mafia Faction they belong to. They may be from the same family, or from different families. The goal of the game is to correctly identify if the other player is friend or foe, while at the same time concealing your own identity from him.

It's good to fire at enemies. It's good to put the gun down for friends. Conversely, it's bad to fire at friends, and bad to put the gun down for enemies. If you do something good, and your opponent does something bad, you win, and your opponent loses. If you and your opponent both make the right decision, or both make the wrong decision, you tie.

Play proceeds by players discussing whether to fire or hold, and the game ends when both players have sent their decision to the mod. Once a decision is sent it cannot be retracted.

Record of games played

Here's a complete record of the games played:

  • Game 1, mathcam (tails, fired) Vs. rite (heads, fired), Draw
  • Game 2, Kelvin (tails, fired) Vs. Someone (heads, fired), Draw
  • Game 3, mikehart (heads, trusted) Vs. Macros (heads, trusted), Draw
  • Game 4, mathcam (heads, trusted) Vs. Kelvin (tails, trusted), Draw
  • Game 5, Stewie (heads, fired) Vs. Someone (heads, trusted), Someone wins.

Variants

One variant on these rules is known as Confrontation Shibboleth, where both players are given (or choose) a code word. If a player says the other's code word, his side is revealed to the other.

(Come to think of it, this looks a lot like two-player Conspiracy would look, except that the two sides are symmetrical.)

These are the games of Confrontation Shibboleth PolarBoy modded:

  • mathcam (Tails, "Knowledge", trusted) Vs. Someone (Tails, "Suspicion", trusted), Tie game
  • mathcam (Tails, "games", fired) Vs. Someone (Tails, "trust", fired), Tie game.
  • rite (Heads, "know", fired) Vs. mlaker (Heads, "scum", trusted), mlaker wins.

And these are the games mlaker modded later

  • mathcam (Tails, "Knowledge", trusted) Vs. Someone (Tails, "Suspicion", trusted), Tie game
  • mathcam (Tails, "games", fired) Vs. Someone (Tails, "trust", fired), Tie game.
  • Rite (Heads, "know", fired) Vs. mlaker (Heads, "scum", trusted), mlaker wins.

Reviews

Actually cuban smoker's Confrontation rules were probably better, as they allowed for more interesting metagaming and backstabbing tactics.
