Compulsive is a role modifier such that the role must use its Night Action each Night unless some external factor prevents the player from doing so. A player with a Compulsive action cannot submit "No Action", and if they fail to submit an action, the player the action's target is randomized. In extreme cases, a player may be killed if they fail to perform the action.

The most common role with this modifier is Vigilante.

Normal version

This modifier is allowed in Complex Normal games.

This modifier is considered Normal on mafiascum.net if the following rules are met: the role PM for a compulsive role must specify that the player with the role, when they confirm, must include an ordered list of all players in the game. If they ever fail to submit an action, their action must be resolved as targeting the first player on that list that is still alive. They are allowed to change the order of the list at any time, e.g. if they think they might accidentally fail to submit a night action. This is done to ensure that compulsive roles can have an action chosen non-randomly for them in the event that they fail to submit.

Variations

Typically in theme games, if you fail to submit an action as a Compulsive role, your action will be randomized.

Use & Balance

The Compulsive modifier is generally used to ensure that actions are used when possible. This is usually ascribed to roles that are pivotal to the setup. By making Vigilante Compulsive, the rate of death can be controlled throughout the game, thus allowing the game to be easier to balance. An example of a role that is Compulsive due to its importance to the setup flavor-wise is Dreaming God.

A role's power is usually only changed slightly by making it Compulsive.

Sample Role PMs

The standardized Role PM for "Compulsive" describes the modifier as follows:

  • As a modifier on a single ability: You must use this ability if able. If you fail to submit an action, you will default to targeting the first alive player on your ordered list. (edit)
  • As a modifier that affects all abilities: You must act if able. If you fail to submit an action, you will default to targeting the first alive player on your ordered list. (edit)

Example (modifying a single ability)

Welcome to game! You are a Town Compulsive Jailkeeper.

You have the following active ability:

  • Each Night, you may target a player. Assuming no interference with your action, that player will be protected from kills that night, but all their actions will be blocked that night. You must use this ability if able. If you fail to submit an action, you will default to targeting the first alive player on your ordered list.

You win if all threats to the town are eliminated and at least one town-aligned player is alive.

Example (affecting all abilities)

Welcome to game! You are a Town Compulsive Jack of All Trades Tracker Doctor.

You must act if able. If you fail to submit an action, you will default to targeting the first alive player on your ordered list.

You have the following active abilities, but may use only one per Night:

  • Once in the game at night, you may target a player. Assuming no interference with your action, you will learn who that player targeted that night. (You will get "no result" if this action is blocked.)
  • Once in the game at night, you may target a player. Assuming no interference with your action, that player will be protected from one kill that night.

You win if all threats to the town are eliminated and at least one town-aligned player is alive.
